Returns Eat Your Profits
Every return costs you far more than the lost sale. You pay for outbound shipping, the return shipping (often absorbed by sellers), potential product damage making the item unsellable, restocking fees and the time spent processing each return. On Amazon, return rates above category averages can also trigger listing suppression.
Why Customers Return Products
The most common return reason on Amazon is item not as described — meaning your listing set expectations the product did not meet. This is entirely within your control. Accurate product descriptions, honest photography, correct sizing information and clear feature specifications prevent the majority of avoidable returns.
Listing Accuracy Is Your First Defence
Review every claim in your listing against the actual product. Measure dimensions yourself rather than trusting supplier specs. Show the product from multiple angles including any imperfections. For clothing or sized items, include detailed measuring guides with your own measurements rather than generic size charts.
Photography Standards
Include a scale reference in at least one photo. Show the product in use so customers understand its actual size and appearance. Include the packaging if it differs from the product appearance. Ensure colours are accurately represented — shoot in natural daylight and avoid heavy filters.
Packaging Improvements
Products that arrive damaged get returned. Invest in proper protective packaging, especially if Amazon is handling fulfilment — FBA warehouses are efficient but not gentle. Test your packaging by ordering your own product and see how it arrives. The cost of better packaging is always less than the cost of damage-related returns.
Post-Purchase Communication
Send a follow-up message with usage tips, care instructions and an invitation to reach out if they have questions. Many returns happen because customers do not know how to use the product properly. A simple message can prevent returns and build customer loyalty.
