eBay vs Amazon for Used and Refurbished Goods

eBay remains one of the most important selling platforms in the UK, with millions of active buyers searching for products every day. Despite the rise of Amazon and newer platforms like TikTok Shop, eBay offers unique advantages — particularly for certain product types and selling strategies.

Having sold on eBay as part of my multi-platform ecommerce brand for over 7 years, I have learned what works and what wastes time on this platform.

Why This Matters for Your Business

Many sellers either ignore eBay entirely or use it without proper optimisation. Both approaches leave money on the table. eBay rewards sellers who understand its specific algorithms, fee structures and buyer behaviours.

Key Strategies

eBay's Cassini search algorithm prioritises listings with complete item specifics, competitive pricing, strong seller metrics and good conversion rates. Unlike Amazon where PPC dominates visibility, eBay organic search is still the primary traffic driver for most sellers — making listing optimisation extremely important.

Promoted Listings on eBay work differently to Amazon PPC. Standard Promoted Listings use a cost-per-sale model (you only pay when someone buys through a promoted click), making them lower risk than cost-per-click advertising. Start with a 2-5% ad rate and adjust based on performance.

Common Mistakes

Incomplete item specifics (eBay heavily penalises listings without them), poor titles that waste characters on unnecessary words, ignoring the Best Offer feature on appropriate listings, not using store categories effectively, and neglecting eBay's analytics tools like Seller Hub and Terapeak.

Practical Tips

Fill in every item specific eBay asks for — it directly impacts search visibility. Use all 80 characters in your title with relevant search terms. Take advantage of eBay's free listing allowance before paying for extras. Monitor your seller performance dashboard weekly and address any issues immediately, as seller standards directly impact search visibility.
