Why Shopify SEO Matters More Than You Think
Most Shopify sellers rely almost entirely on paid ads (Facebook, Instagram, Google Shopping) to drive traffic. When the ads stop, so do the sales. SEO gives you traffic that keeps coming without ongoing ad spend — but it takes time and consistency to build.
The good news: Shopify handles the technical SEO basics reasonably well out of the box. The bad news: the on-page SEO (what you write) is where most shops fall down.
Page Titles and Meta Descriptions
Every page on your Shopify store has a page title and meta description that appear in Google search results. Most Shopify sellers leave these as defaults, which is a missed opportunity.
- Homepage: Include your brand name + what you sell + location if relevant. "Handmade Candles UK | [Brand Name] — Natural Soy Wax Candles"
- Product pages: Lead with the product name, include key attributes. "Large Lavender Soy Candle — 50 Hour Burn | [Brand Name]"
- Collection pages: Describe the category. "Soy Wax Candles Collection | Hand-Poured in Manchester"
- Meta descriptions: Write these as mini sales pitches (155-160 characters). Include your USP and a reason to click.
Product Page SEO
Your product descriptions need to do double duty — convince the buyer AND satisfy Google. Here's how:
- Write unique descriptions — don't copy manufacturer descriptions. Google penalises duplicate content
- Include your target keyword naturally — in the title, first paragraph, and at least once more in the body
- Use headings (H2, H3) — break up your description with headings that include relevant terms
- Add alt text to all images — describe what's in the image, include the product name
- Minimum 300 words — thin product pages rarely rank. Include materials, dimensions, care instructions, use cases
Blogging on Shopify
Shopify's built-in blog is basic but functional. Publishing regular blog content is the best way to rank for informational searches that lead to product discovery. If you sell candles, blog about "how to make your home smell amazing" or "soy vs paraffin candles — what's the difference." These attract visitors who may then browse your shop.
Aim for 1-2 blog posts per month, minimum 800 words each, targeting specific keywords your customers actually search for.
Technical Quick Wins
- Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console (yourshop.com/sitemap.xml)
- Fix broken links — use a free crawler tool to find 404 errors
- Speed optimisation — compress images, limit apps, use a fast theme. Page speed is a ranking factor
- Mobile experience — the majority of your traffic is mobile. Test your shop on a phone regularly
Realistic Expectations
SEO won't replace your paid ads overnight. Expect 3-6 months before you see meaningful organic traffic. But once it builds, it compounds — unlike ads which stop the moment you stop paying. I help Shopify sellers build this foundation alongside their marketplace strategy.
