Social Proof in E-Commerce: Beyond Just Product Reviews

Social proof drives purchasing decisions. How to build and leverage it across your e-commerce channels.

Humans are social creatures. We look to others when making decisions. In e-commerce, where customers cannot physically examine products, social proof is everything.

Types of Social Proof

  • Customer reviews: The most obvious and most powerful
  • User-generated content: Photos and videos from real customers
  • Bestseller badges: Amazon Best Seller and Amazon Choice badges signal popularity
  • Social media: Real people using and recommending your product
  • Press mentions: Featured in, recommended by, as seen on

Building Social Proof

Actively encourage reviews through follow-up emails. Share user-generated content on social media. Seek press coverage and influencer partnerships. Display testimonials prominently on your website.

Amazon Specific

Focus on getting 15 or more reviews as quickly as possible. This is the threshold where conversion rates noticeably improve. Use Vine, Request a Review button, and excellent customer experience to build velocity.
