E-Commerce Product Photography: DIY vs Professional

Great product photos sell products. When to DIY and when to hire a professional photographer.

Product photography is the single most important element of any e-commerce listing. Customers cannot touch, hold, or try your product. Photos are everything.

Amazon Requirements

  • Main image: white background, product fills 85 percent of frame
  • At least 6 additional images showing different angles, packaging, size context
  • Minimum 1,600 pixels on longest side for zoom functionality

DIY Photography

For small products, a lightbox, smartphone, and natural light can produce good results. Cost: under 50 pounds for a basic setup. Good for: testing new products, low-volume items, quick updates.

Professional Photography

For hero products and lifestyle images, professional photography pays for itself in higher conversion rates. A professional shoot for a single product typically costs 100 to 300 pounds.

Infographic Images

Infographic images (product photos with text overlays highlighting features) are increasingly important. They communicate key selling points without the customer needing to read.
