Shopify Abandoned Cart Recovery: Get Back 10-15% of Lost Sales

How to set up and optimise Shopify abandoned cart emails to recover sales — timing, messaging, and what actually works.

The Scale of the Problem

Around 70% of shoppers who add items to their cart leave without completing the purchase. On a Shopify store doing £5,000/month, that means roughly £11,500 in abandoned carts. Recovering even 10% of that is an extra £1,150/month — for free.

Shopify's Built-In Abandoned Cart Emails

Shopify includes a free abandoned checkout recovery email. It's basic but effective:

  • Goes to Settings → Checkout → Abandoned checkouts
  • You can customise the email content and timing
  • It sends one email to customers who entered their email but didn't complete the purchase

Set the timing to 1 hour after abandonment. This is the sweet spot — the buyer still remembers what they wanted, and the urgency is fresh. Waiting 10 hours or 24 hours is too late for most impulse purchases.

What to Say in the Email

Keep it simple and direct:

  • Subject line: "You left something behind" or "Still thinking about it?" — avoid clickbait, be friendly
  • Body: Show the product image and name. Remind them what they were buying. Include a direct link back to their cart.
  • Don't discount immediately — the first email should just be a reminder. If you do a three-email sequence (via Klaviyo), offer a small discount (5-10%) in the third email only.

Upgrading to a Multi-Email Sequence

If you want more than one email, you'll need Klaviyo or a similar app. A three-email abandoned cart sequence typically recovers 2-3x more than a single email:

  • Email 1 (1 hour): Simple reminder with cart contents and link
  • Email 2 (24 hours): Social proof — include a review or testimonial, remind them of your USP (free shipping, quality guarantee, etc.)
  • Email 3 (72 hours): Final nudge with a small incentive (free shipping code or 5-10% discount). Create mild urgency: "Your cart will expire soon"

SMS Recovery

If you have the customer's phone number and SMS consent, abandoned cart SMS has higher open rates than email (98% vs 20-30%). But SMS costs more per message and can feel intrusive. Use it sparingly — one SMS at the 2-hour mark, that's it.

What Recovery Rate to Expect

With a single email: 3-5% recovery rate. With a three-email sequence: 5-10%. With email + SMS: 8-15%. These are realistic numbers for UK Shopify stores. Anyone claiming 30%+ recovery rates is either lying or measuring incorrectly.

Don't Train Customers to Abandon

The biggest risk of abandoned cart emails is conditioning customers to deliberately abandon carts to receive a discount. This is why I recommend not offering a discount in the first email, keeping discounts small (5% not 20%), and only using discounts in the final email of a sequence. Your goal is to remind genuine forgetters, not reward strategic abandoners.
