Getting Shipping Right Matters More Than You Think
Shipping is the #1 reason for cart abandonment after "just browsing." If your shipping costs are too high, too confusing, or delivery times aren't clear, buyers leave. Getting this right directly impacts revenue.
Setting Up UK Shipping Zones
In Shopify, go to Settings → Shipping and delivery. Create your shipping zones:
- UK Mainland — England, Scotland, Wales. Your primary zone with lowest rates
- Northern Ireland — may need separate rates due to customs considerations post-Brexit
- Scottish Highlands & Islands — many carriers charge extra for these postcodes
- Channel Islands & Isle of Man — outside the UK VAT area, may need separate handling
Pricing Strategies
Free shipping with threshold — the most effective approach for most UK sellers. "Free delivery on orders over £30" (or whatever makes sense for your margins). This increases average order value as buyers add items to hit the threshold.
Flat rate shipping — simple and predictable. "£3.95 standard delivery" works well if your products are similar sizes and weights.
Calculated rates — Shopify can calculate real-time rates from carriers. Useful if your product sizes vary dramatically, but can cause sticker shock at checkout.
Carrier Options for UK Sellers
Royal Mail — still the default for small, lightweight items. Buyers trust it. Second Class is cheapest, First Class for speed. Use Royal Mail Click & Drop for printing labels and booking collections.
Evri (formerly Hermes) — cheapest option for parcels. Good for volume sellers. Tracking included. Buyer perception is mixed but improving.
DPD — premium delivery experience. One-hour delivery windows, excellent tracking. Costs more but premium brands benefit from the experience.
Amazon Shipping — yes, Amazon offers shipping services to non-Amazon sellers. Competitive rates and the Amazon delivery experience. Worth investigating.
International Shipping
If you sell internationally from Shopify, you need to decide: flat rate per zone, calculated rates, or free international shipping above a threshold.
For EU customers post-Brexit, you'll need to handle customs declarations. Consider using a service like Global-e or Shopify Markets to automate customs and duties calculations. Or start simply with "International tracked delivery: £9.95" to Europe.
Free Shipping: The Maths
Before offering free shipping, do the actual calculation. If your average order is £25, delivery costs you £3.50, and your margin is 50%, free shipping cuts your profit from £12.50 to £9.00 — a 28% profit reduction. Either build shipping into your product prices or set the free shipping threshold high enough to absorb the cost.
