Winning the Amazon Buy Box: What Actually Matters

The Buy Box drives 80% of Amazon sales. Here is how the algorithm decides who wins it.

Around 80 percent of Amazon sales go through the Buy Box. If you do not have it, you are barely visible. Here is what actually determines Buy Box ownership.

Price

Competitive pricing is the single biggest factor. This does not mean cheapest, but your total price (item plus shipping) must be competitive with other offers on the same listing.

Fulfilment Method

FBA sellers have a significant Buy Box advantage because Amazon trusts its own fulfilment for delivery speed and reliability. FBM sellers can compete but need excellent metrics.

Seller Metrics

  • Order Defect Rate: Below 1 percent
  • Late Dispatch Rate: Below 4 percent
  • Valid Tracking Rate: Above 95 percent
  • Customer Response Time: Under 24 hours

Stock Availability

You cannot win the Buy Box if you are out of stock. Consistent availability signals reliability to the algorithm.
