Revenue Is Not Cash in Your Pocket
One of the biggest threats to growing ecommerce businesses is not lack of sales — it is cash flow. You can be profitable on paper while running out of actual cash, because marketplace payouts are delayed, inventory must be purchased upfront, and expenses do not wait for your money to arrive.
The Cash Flow Timing Problem
Amazon pays every 14 days. Etsy deposits daily but holds reserves for new sellers. eBay pays out on a weekly or daily schedule depending on seller level. Meanwhile, you need to pay suppliers (often upfront or on 30-day terms), pay for shipping, advertising and platform subscriptions on fixed schedules.
The gap between when you spend money and when you receive it creates cash flow pressure — especially during growth phases when you need to buy more inventory to fulfil increasing demand.
Practical Cash Flow Management
Build a simple cash flow spreadsheet that tracks: expected payout dates from each platform, upcoming supplier payments, monthly fixed costs (subscriptions, rent, insurance), and advertising spend. Update it weekly. The goal is to always know your cash position 4-6 weeks ahead.
Keep a cash reserve equal to at least one month of fixed costs plus one inventory order. This buffer protects you from payout delays, returns spikes or unexpected costs.
Inventory Investment Decisions
Stock is cash sitting on shelves. Over-ordering ties up cash that could be used for advertising or expansion. Under-ordering means stockouts that damage your search rankings. Find the balance by tracking your sell-through rate and maintaining 6-8 weeks of stock for steady sellers.
Seasonal Cash Planning
Q4 requires significant advance investment — you need to buy inventory in September-October for November-December sales, but the cash from those sales does not arrive until January. Plan for this gap well in advance. Consider supplier payment terms, platform lending (Amazon Lending, PayPal Working Capital) or a business credit line.
